Poipet is the busiest land crossing between Thailand and Cambodia. Gambling is illegal in Thailand, consequently the no man’s land between both countries hosts several large casinos attracting wealthy Thais who come to gamble without having to buy a visa to enter Cambodia. In addition the large number of tourists that cross the border here on their way or back from Siem Reap, bring a large cash flow to this dusty town. Men, Women, Children or whole families work pushing dilapidated wooden carts back and forth across the border, importing and exporting goods. Children work the streets collecting scraps, selling goods, and begging. The dire living conditions of these children often push them to using drugs, glue being the cheapest and most readily available high.
